Season by season
Spring (March–May). Warm, clear days and green hills after winter rain. From May, low cloud often covers the coast in the morning.
Summer (June–August). Hot and dry inland, cooler at the beach, where “June gloom” can linger until midday. Theme parks are at their busiest.
Autumn (September–November). Often the hottest and clearest weather of the year in September and October, with warm sea temperatures and fewer families.
Winter (December–February). Mild days, cool nights and most of the year’s rain, falling in short bursts. Good hotel prices outside the holidays.

Tip: if the beach is grey on a summer morning, head inland first — to Griffith Park or a studio — and come back to the coast in the afternoon, when the cloud has usually burned off.
